How Does the Job Centre Plus Job Seekers Allowance Work ?

Contribution-based Jobseeker's Allowance

Eligibility for Contribution-based Jobseekers Allowance depends on if you have paid class 1 National Insurance (NI) contributions during the tax year. Self employed contributions will not generally qualify.

Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance

This is based on your income and savings. If you have not paid enough National Insurance contributions and/or you're on a low income you may not be entitled to Income-based job seekers allowance

Jobseekers Allowance for 16 and 17 year olds

If you're unemployed between the ages of 16 or 17, you may be able to get income-based Jobseekers Allowance for a short amount of time.

For example, this could be if you:

  • are forced to live move out of your parents home
  • will struggle to live without jobseekers allowance
  • are 1 of 2 people with a dependable child.
